Where’s my handout?

Saturday, September 20th, 2008

The government’s proposed plan to bail out the financial services industry, as of now, amounts to about $2000 for every person in the country (see the New York Times article). How about we just skip giving these morons more money and directly give it to the people instead? I know that we would put the $8000 we would get back into the economy, and probably quickly.

The thing that bugs me the most is that there do not yet appear to be any penalties that will be applied to the people who got us into this mess in the first place. I haven’t read every article and analysis, but I’ve read enough to know that the people in charge of these banks, etc. didn’t even know what their total exposures were. They also probably couldn’t explain what some of the derivative instruments were that they were selling. All they knew is that they were making money. Which is the killer for me: they didn’t care what it was they were selling as long as it made them money. Too many of them didn’t fully appreciate the risks involved because they were making so much money. I think you can sense my theme here. They were channeling Gordon Gecko again.

I’m waiting for the automobile and airline industries to come to Congress and ask for their handout. If I was unable to pay my debts, nobody would care and I’d have to file for bankruptcy. But some companies have been deemed “too big to fail.” Tough crap on them. So the broader economy takes one on the chin. I’d rather have that now than potentially worse fallout later.

Terminator terminated in my house

Monday, September 15th, 2008

I tried liking the Terminator TV show. I really tried. I fought through Season 1, with each episode offering my just enough to keep watching. The Season 2 premiere killed it though. I can’t keep watching this formulaic crap. Save thing every week: blow shit up, question Cameron‘s loyalty (will she kill John? will Sarah kill Cameron?), suffer through Brian Austin Green, advance the plot by millimeters. Too much time, not enough payoff. You’re done.

Oh, No! (Mercenaries 2 song)

Friday, September 12th, 2008

If you watch any TV (and since I watch very little TV, you probably watch more than me), you’ve likely seen the commercial for the video game Mercenaries 2. It has a song with the catchy piano riff in it. I liked it enough to try to figure out if it was a whole song or just a commercial jingle. It is a whole song, and it’s available for free from the game developers’ (Pandemic Studios) Web site: see the Downloads page or get the song directly. When you listen to the whole thing, it’s pretty funny. The site doesn’t tell you who it’s by, but various other sites attribute it to the Wojahn Brothers, though I can’t find anything definitive. Enjoy!

Not ready for PDR

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

The Philadelphia Distance Run (PDR in case you couldn’t guess) is in two weeks. I went for 12.3 on Sunday. It was not pretty. I would like to cover another 3/4 mile in about 10 minutes less. Running by myself won’t cut it. I’ll need to rely on the kindness of others to run with. I know I could try latching onto a group, but that generally doesn’t work for me. There’s usually a very loose cohesiveness and after a while, the group blows apart. Or I just wind up drifting far enough off the back that it appears to blow up. I haven’t raced in a group of strangers for years. I’m not fast enough to stay with faster people and apparently just a little too fast for others to hang on. Sort of like the way I drive, just with less cursing.

Don LaFontaine, RIP

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Movie trailer voice-over God Don Lafontaine died. See stories from People magazine and The Hollywood Reporter. You know you’ve heard the voice before, but might not know the name. OK, you might, if you saw that Geico commercial. Check out his Web site in case you don’t remember (just don’t skip the intro). And just for laughs: a parody from Frank TV.
