About Apple IP Watch
What is this section?
Apple IP Watch (AIPW) provides information, discussion, and analysis of Apple Computer-related IP issues. It deals with issued patents, published patent applications, trademarks, and various other IP issues. The information discussed here is based solely on publicly available information; I have no inside information sources. For starters, I will only write about IP items that are clearly assigned to Apple and focus on U.S.-based stuff. I may expand the scope of coverage once I see how much this is going to be. But most patents and trademarks (a big assumption on my part) that are filed in the U.S. are also likely to be filed internationally as well. The differences mostly relate to publication timing issues.
What does AIPW offer that’s special?
Unlike others who write about Apple-related IP issues, I am a registered patent attorney (see my USPTO registration information) with over nine years of patent preparation and prosecution experience. And I am a long-time Apple user - I have had an Apple-branded computer at home since November 1983 (I just can’t convince them to use Macs at the office).
What this means is that ordinary patent matters won’t get blown out of proportion. For example, the whole August 2005 dust-up about Apple having to pay royalties to Microsoft for the iPod was the result of a Microsoft patent being cited during the prosecution of one of Apple’s iPod-related patents. (See my analysis of the whole thing.) This sort of thing happens all the time during patent prosecution, but without the relevant patent background, simple news (or non-news, depending on the issue) can easily get misinterpreted.
You won’t see such histrionics here.
As I get more accustomed to writing these blurbs, more of my humor (or attempts at humor) are likely to creep into the blurbs. This also depends on how early in the morning or how late at night these things are written. This is an outside-of-work project for me.
Can I use information from AIPW on my site?
No, but you can freely link to any page here.
Why is this site no longer at AppleIPWatch.info?
Simply because I no longer have the time to maintain it. It required a great deal more of my time than I thought it would — poor pre-launch due diligence on my part. I will occasionally post here about Apple patents, etc. I still do have an interest in the subject, just not the time to allow it to be all-consuming. Besides, I couldn’t keep up with one blog, let alone two. ![]()
