On closing the Center City Philly Borders store

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Went over there at lunch today to check out the store closing deals. As of today, only 20% off most books and magazines are 40% off. Some stuff has been picked over, and the store was very crowded.

All sales are final, but I think they do a dick move by marking the bar code on the books with a Sharpie. So don’t buy anything you intend to give as a gift (I think it looks tacky).

It’s a little sad to see the store closing. They had some good stuff (though over the last year-plus, they drastically cut back the computer book section) and the occasional deal as a Rewards member was nice. Based on the high traffic location (corner of Broad and Chestnut), I am a little surprised that this store was selected for closing, but I imagine that the rent wasn’t cheap.

24gasm on Season 7

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

I finally finished watching Season 7 of 24 on DVD over the weekend. (I was trying to be clever with “24gasm”, but found out some more clever people beat me to it.)

Spolier Alert: Some plot points from Season 7 follow. If you don’t want to know, stop now.

A few comments on Season 7.

  • Which Tony is it? First he’s alive, and a bad guy. Then a good guy. Then away for a little while. Then back again, but still a good guy. Then a really bad guy. Then in custody. That much flailing around leads to a high degree of difficulty (a PDF document explaining how to calculate the degree of difficult for diving); I’d says it’s at least a 3.5.
  • More Kim Bauer stupidity. That whole thing in the airport: chasing the bad guy while wearing heels, the security guards get shot, the car crashes through the barrier and flips over. Kim reaches in to grab tha laptop and the car catches on fire along with Kim’s arm. Makes me wistful for the cougar from Season 2 (read this as a “jump the shark” moment).
  • I still really, really hate Chloe. Really. Please kill this character. Go all Chef on her, so she can’t come back, a la Tony. And while you’re at it, kill Janice too.
  • A season-ending cliffhanger? Will Jack live? (Well, duh – he’s in Season 8.) Will Renee go all Jack Bauer on Alan Wilson? (No, she doesn’t have the stones, and he wouldn’t break anyway.) What’s going to happen to Tony? (Rot in prison until he receives a poison pill to swallow.) What’s going to happen to Olivia? (Go back to being a consultant in the private sector. Conspiracy to commit murder charge? Feh.)

Just a few more days to the Season 8 24gasm. Enjoy!

Why I think the Eagles signed Michael Vick

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

It’s obviously not for the controversy, unless it’s for a giant distraction from some other problem. The Eagles have said that there is no quarterback “situation,” meaning that McNabb is the starter and Kolb is the #2. But I still can’t figure out a football based reason why Vick is there.

Then it occurred to me: McNabb is desperate to win a Super Bowl. He’s on the backside of his career, at 32 and in his 11th season. Not that old, but getting there in NFL terms. He has said numerous times that there is a “limited time window” to win a championship. The older he gets, the more limited the window becomes. I think the Eagles are doing whatever they can to help him get his ring. But even so, signing Vick doesn’t make sense to help that goal. Why not sign a wide receiver? There were a few available in the off-season and the Eagles had money to spend.

Winning cures lots of problems. It will take a hell of a lot of wins (i.e., minimally getting to the Super Bowl) to overcome the controversy of signing Vick.

Twitter has nuked the fridge

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Or jumped the shark, if you’re feeling a little old school.

I don’t even use Twitter. I thought about maybe, someday using it instead of tiny little blog posts.

But now that Oprah uses it (and that’s Twitter’s “big news”), and people seemed to be more focused on who has the most followers, I think it’s time has gone. Some people will disagree and think Twitter can be saved from itself, but I think I’m not the only one who is done with Twitter.

What I want in an electronic reader

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

Now that Amazon’s Kindle 2 (electric boogaloo) is out, I’ve decided that I don’t like it. It’s not what I would consider to be an ideal electronic reader. I’m looking for the following features, and I’m not buying one until somebody meets these criteria.

  1. Color screen. This is a must. Why? See #2 below.
  2. Standard magazine-size. I read more magazines than books of late, and it would be far easier to carry around a single device that had all my magazines on there. Magazine publishers should be jumping at the idea (like Hearst is; see this Fortune story).

Your own, personal, bailout

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

(Think Depeche Mode’s Personal Jesus Depeche Mode - Violator - Personal Jesus when you read the title and it might be funny.)

That aside, I cam across an entertaining article on Yahoo! Finance last week, titled “Why I Deserve a Bailout“. A little light-hearted reading for your enjoyment.

Don LaFontaine, RIP

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Movie trailer voice-over God Don Lafontaine died. See stories from People magazine and The Hollywood Reporter. You know you’ve heard the voice before, but might not know the name. OK, you might, if you saw that Geico commercial. Check out his Web site in case you don’t remember (just don’t skip the intro). And just for laughs: a parody from Frank TV.

I can’t win my office NCAA Tourney pool

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Yet again, I fail to win the office pool. But, I can finish second if Kansas beats UCLA for the title. Not bad, since I was tied for 36th place after the first two rounds. The guy who was leading can finish no better than 14th or something like that. Though I continue to believe that the most points are really gained in a pool like this in the first and second rounds. In the later rounds, more often than not, logic takes over and the Cinderellas wind up going home.

This year is rather unique in that it’s the first time since the field expanded to 64 teams (1985) that all four #1 seeds have made it to the Final Four. Kind of shocking really.

And as a total non-sequitur to close this out, it is insanely difficult to type this while holding Caroline. One-handed typing is definitely not my thing.

Introducing Miss Caroline

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Miss Caroline Grace Shaw-Gelman was born on February 18, 2008 at 5:16am. She was 21 inches long and weighed 8 pounds, 8 ounces. Since Darling wife weighs about 100 pounds or so, that’s a big baby!

Here’s her first quasi-official picture (it’s a little dark, but I didn’t want the flash to startle her).
